Gospel Procession

Sunday Mornings

Our 8:00 a.m. service on Sunday morning is contemplative and quiet. There is no music. It is based on Rite I in the Book of Common Prayer. "Rite I" is an order of worship that uses the English language that was current when the first Book of Common Prayer was issued in England in 1549.

Our 9:00 a.m. service on Sunday morning is a new service that is conducted Spanish.

Our 10:30 a.m. service is larger, more lively and multi-generational. Led by the Adult Choir, we sing during much of the service, accompanied by organ and other instruments. The order of worship is usually based on "Rite II," which follows contemporary English usage. Our Handbell, Youth and Cherub Choirs also perform regularly at this service.

Children's Chapel is held when we have a parent volunteer, during the 10:30 service. Children ages 3-7 are dismissed after the Gospel reading, and return during the Peace.

Sung Services

Evensong is sung Evening Prayer, from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. The choir leads this service of prayer with chanted preces and responses, sung canticles, and choral anthems. The tone of the service is meditative and reflective. Eucharist is not celebrated at this service, and there is no sermon. Emmanuel hosts many area choirs for our once-monthly Evensong services, including the JMU Madison Singers, the JMU Treble Chamber Choir, the JMU Men's Chamber Ensemble (KOR) and the EMS Touring Choir.
